Rate of pay: $18/hr
Schedule: Full Time - 40 hrs/week

Volunteers of America, Utah provides a bridge to self-reliance and health for vulnerable individuals and populations who struggle with homelessness, addiction and mental illness in our Wasatch Front communities.

Volunteers of America, Utah is seeking a Library Outreach Supervisor to join the Homeless Outreach Program’s management team. This supervisor is responsible for leading the library team with day-to-day operations and assigning duties as they arise. Individuals on this team are responsible for engaging with patrons of Salt Lake County library branches and connecting unsheltered clients with community resources, supplies and higher-level referrals. The objective is to provide resources that assist this community with stabilization and exiting homelessness.

Essential Duties

Selected Staff Management:
  • Provide direct supervision, guidance, training, and support to Library Engagement Team.
  • Monitor and ensure required staff coverage for program efficiency and staff safety.
  • Maintain regular communication with Library Management addressing any issues.
  • Coordinate bimonthly Care Coordination learning opportunities, presentations and field trips, identifying learning opportunities for staff, areas for improvement, and service needs.
  • Attend community meetings as needed to enhance the work of the outreach team and/or continuum of homeless services.

Client Services:

  • Oversee client services provided Library Engagement Workers and work closely with Program Director regarding client services and progress.
  • Actively engage in providing direct client service with those experiencing or who are imminent risk of homelessness within and in the surrounding areas of the Salt Lake City Library branches.
  • Model De-escalation skills and Trauma informed practices for staff when managing difficult client behaviors.
  • Ensure safe environment for staff and clients by listening to client and staff concerns, Library Security, and Library Management, evaluating our processes and procedures to make any necessary adjustments to service delivery.
  • Utilize appropriate licensing, agency and contract requirements to guide daily program operations and program development.
  • Maintain and foster positive relationships with community entities, other resource centers, co-workers, Library staff, agency donors and emergency response services.
  • Attend Clinical Staffing regularly in order to present client information with a Licensed Mental Health Therapist and follow their recommendations.
  • Communicate and address concerns or incidences with Program Director in a timely manner, being receptive to feedback or any direction provided.  

A degree in a social services field or any combination of education, experience, and training which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of the homeless population.
  • Receptive to feedback and direction provided and willingness to work and collaborate as a team.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients.
  • Ability to work with clients regardless of age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and/or sexual orientation, etc.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in crisis situations.
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize Motivational Interviewing technique.
  • Ability to independently plan, prioritize, and execute own work to ensure completion of daily tasks.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Possession of valid Driver’s License and good driving record in order to transport clients in agency vehicle as needed.
  • May be required to lift up to 25 Ibs. Move around the library building.
